Marli Want

Hi! I'm Marli, first mate on the SV Between Dreams. I have enjoyed day sailing with others over the years and eventually on our own boats, with a couple of short charters along the way. Our plan to sail to Florida and the Bahamas is our biggest sailing adventure by far! I am in charge of the galley and home school for the kids. When sailing, we all have a job to do.
At home in New Orleans, I am a lawyer by training and work as a federal law clerk. I also enjoy swimming with the Riptide Masters swim group, creating ceramics at Earth and Fire pottery studio, and yoga practice.

After our overly exciting travel from Panama City to Destin on April 10, we slept soundly at anchor, even with the creaking anchor bridle in the somewhat gusty conditions. After breakfast, we took the dinghy to shore. Last time we were in Destin we had trouble finding a place to tie up the dinghy--all the docks (and the entire shoreline is filled with docks) have "no docking" signs. We previously ended up docking at a gas filling dock; the folks at the associated restaurant said it would be fine for us stay there for a couple of hours while we ran errands.

This seemed strange because the forecast only called for 10-15 knot winds and 1-3 foot seas. Nonetheless we kept our eye on it. This morning the advisory had been extended until 7am, but we realized it seemed more focused on the area to our west.

Since we moved onto the boat in mid February, I have been wondering, is the weather always like this? It seems colder and windier more often. But I think we are just experiencing the weather more than we do in our climate controlled lives. Read a little more about the weather's impact on us in this article.
