Joelle Want

Hi! I am Joelle Want, a member of the sailing crew for the sailing vessel Between Dreams. Our boat is Catalina 42, and we are trying to sail to the Bahamas! I am a 7th grader, and I dance a lot. I am on pointe, and sort of flexible (you decide!). I love animals, and if you asked me if I was a cat or a dog person I would not be able to choose! I do have an adorable beagle named Clover, but I really wish I had a kitten!

I live in New Orleans, where the Creole Creamery ice cream shop is located. My favorite ice cream flavor(s) are mint chocolate chip, especially a take on this classic flavor called Dessert at Tiffanys. I also love nectar sherbet.

Let’s start at the beginning. We are a family who are on a journey of a lifetime: sailing to the Bahamas! We have been preparing our boat, a Catalina 42, for this trip for many months. The boat is far from homey, but is cozy, and is slowly getting to that point! Right now we are in Slidell, yesterday we sailed across Lake Pontchartrain!

When we sailed to Florida through the I.C.W. (Intracoastal Waterway) there was a cold front coming, with high winds, so we hunkered down in a little harbor for a couple of days. We were just chilling at home( I mean boat😝) and did a couple loads of laundry. We could see some dolphins from the boat, and we saw some jellyfish too. Me and Marguerite went to a couple museums, Pensacola Museum of History and the Children’s Museum. We got take-out Thai food, but we really just spent the time at the boat and caught up with schoolwork.

Hello! If you are reading this, and you are not familiar with our adventure, you might be wondering ‘how are they going to do school work?’ I mean, you have heard that Marguerite and I are in school, so you probably don’t think we are just going to take a nice, long, couple of months break, right?  Right! We are starting homeschool!

We have gone to many different places, and lots of them have had beaches. At the beaches before we got to Florida, sometimes we would have a walk, or a sunset stroll, maybe we would go wading since the tide went out, but we never would get to really swim. I think that is because of two things: it was too cold for swimming, and the swimsuits were just packed away in vacuum-sealed bags. Once we got to Florida we anchored a lot, at Destin, Panama City, Big Lagoon near Pensacola. But at all those places, we never really got to go swimming, until Port St. Joe and Eagle Harbor.
