Spanish Point Pensacola - Goodbye Weekenders!

I think last night was one of the best nights I ever slept at anchorage. I was exhausted. I wasn't worrying about forthcoming travel. And with calm winds, it was so quiet! No creaking, no banging, no tapping! Very nice.

But...as the sun came up, the weekend boaters arrived. Motor boats passing by on the ICW, and later coming to the shore of the Lagoon to play. And as they pass, they leave a wake. And the wake rocks our boat. Side to side, side to side. Not bad enough to knock things over, but sometimes you have to sit down or grab onto something. Not very nice.

We took down the dinghy and went to shore. First spot we stopped we saw a couple of what looked like sea cucumbers floating around. Weird. Sea CucumberBut, we could not cross over to the gulf because the dunes were marked by a line. So we motored a little farther down to a crossing. The operator of a charter pontoon flagged us down and shared that he, too, is a sailor. He took his boat down to the Exumas in December, and got back up here in March for seasonal work. He must be in his late 20s. He was interested in what we were up to, remarking that he doesn't usually see young people on sailboats around here. Young people? Well its true, most of the cruisers we've run into are retired.

We just walked around a bit, and the girls gave their new fishing net a try, catching a few tiny fish they planned to use as bait. Fishing Net at BeachTrouble was, when we got back to the boat, neither of them wanted to touch the bait fish, I was making lunch, and Jason was catching up on work after all the diversions Thursday and Friday. After much shouting at one another, they eventually got it hooked, but no luck catching any fish.

After chilling (and rocking) after lunch, the girls and I went back to shore, where they enjoyed playing in the surf. Too cold for me, but I enjoyed watching. When we got back around 5pm, two new sailboats had anchored near us. And...it seems most of the weekenders have left because the wakes have all but disappeared. Yay!! Now we can enjoy shish kabobs on the grill. As we were preparing dinner, the girls were choreographing a show on the silks. And then the Blue Angels flew by--their base is right near here. They were flying back from an air show this weekend. What a nice evening.
